The use of the subjunctive usually appears to be quite difficult for the
speaker of English. The reason for this is that the subjunctive is seldom used
in English, whereas it is widely used in Spanish. However, the use of the
subjunctive is most logical once one understands the meaning of the word subjunctive
as contrasted with the word indicative. Many grammar
books categorize the types of verbs or expressions that must be followed by the
subjunctive. Categories such as desire, sentiment, volition, cause, demand,
request, doubt, necessity, etc., are given. This nearly endless list is quite
difficult to remember when attempting to speak the language. The basic rule for
knowing when to use the subjunctive is this: Subjunctive implies
subjectivity. If there exists the possibility that the action
about which I am speaking has not or may not take place it is necessary to use
the subjunctive. However, if it is a realized fact that the action has taken or
definitely will take place the indicative is used. Because of the
indefinite nature of the subjunctive it is almost always found in a dependent
clause. It is introduced by some statement that lends subjectivity and
vagueness to the definite realization of the action in the dependent clause.
Study the following examples.
John is
going to the store.
John
went to the store.
In the previous two sentences the speaker is
relating an objective fact. Therefore the indicative is used.
I want
John to go to the store.
I tell
John to go to the store.
I hope John
goes to the store.
I
prefer that John go to the store.
It is
necessary for John to go to the store.
It is
possible that John will go to the store.
In all of the above statements it is not fact that John will actually go to the store. For this reason all of these clauses would be in the subjunctive in Spanish. Whereas in English an infinitive construction is often used, in Spanish a clause must be used Ñ I want that John go to the store. The only time a clause is not used is when there is no change of subject in the sentence.
I want
to go to the store.
Note that
the subjunctive may also be used in adverbial clauses.
I will
see John as soon as he arrives.
I will
see John when he arrives.
Since John has not yet arrived the subjunctive must be used since there is no absolute guarantee that he will arrive.
I saw
John as soon as he arrived.
I saw
John when he arrived.
Since John has in reality arrived, there is no need
for the subjunctive. The indicative would be used.
FORMATION OF THE PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVE
To form
the present subjunctive of all verbs, the first-person singular of the present
indicative is used. The personal ending -o is
dropped. To the root are added the personal endings of the subjunctive. You
will note that the personal endings of the present subjunctive are the reverse
of those used for the indicative. The vowel e is used
for -ar verbs and the vowel a
is used for -er and -ir
verbs.

Many verbs that imply a command, order, or advice also take the subjunctive since it is not definite whether or not the order or advice will be carried out. These verbs work in a somewhat special way in that the indirect object of the main clause also functions as the subject of the dependent clause.
