MAKING A SENTENCE NEGATIVE
The most common way to make a sentence negative in
Spanish is to place the word no before
the verbal expression.
Carlos
conoce a Maria. Charles
knows Mary.
Carlos
no conoce a Maria. Charles
doesn't know Mary.
Los
soldados luchan mucho. The
soldiers fight a great deal.
Los
soldados no luchan mucho. The
soldiers don't fight much.
He
terminado. I
have finished.
No he
terminado. I
haven't finished.
If an object pronoun precedes the verb, the negative
word no precedes the object pronoun.
Lo
conozco. I
know him.
No lo
conozco. I
don't know him.
La he
visto. I
have seen her.
No la
he visto. I
haven't seen her.

Note that the placement of the negative word in the
sentence can vary. The negative word can precede the verb and be used alone or
it can be used with no and follow the verb.
Unlike English, many negative words can be used in
the same sentence.
Carlos
nunca dice nada a nadie. Charles
never says anything to anyone.
Nunca
va. No va nunca.

after a negative sentence to contradict the negative statement. Its English
meaning is "but rather."

A peculiar usage of negatives in Spanish is that
certain expressions denote a negative meaning even though no negative word is
used in the sentence. Study the following examples.

En toda
la noche, he podido dormir. Not
all night was I able to sleep.
En el mundo se encuentra tal belleza. Not in the entire world does one encounter such beauty.
