Spanish verbs at first appear to be
quite difficult to the speaker of English. The reason for this is that Spanish
verbs function in quite a different way from English verbs. In English, we use
subject pronouns such as I, you, he. In Spanish, subject pronouns are
relatively unimportant. It is the ending of the verb that indicates the doer of
the action. In order to form tenses English verbs use helping verbs as tense
indicators. Examples of such auxiliary verbs are do, have, had, was, will,
would. In Spanish it is the verb ending that changes in order to indicate the
tense of the verb.
Fortunately, each verb does not function as an entity unto itself. Many verbs that are formed in the same way can be grouped together into classes or conjugations. This greatly facilitates learning the verbs. As you will observe in subsequent parts of this chapter, even many so-called irregular verbs have characteristics in common and can thus be grouped together.
In Spanish, there are four ways to
express the pronoun you. When addressing a friend, relative, or, close
associate the pronoun tú is used. This is called the familiar singular
form. When addressing someone whom you do not know well, or someone older than
yourself, the pronoun Ud. (abbreviation for Usted) is used. This
is called the formal singular. When addressing two or more people, either
friends or mere acquaintances, the pronoun Uds.
(abbreviation for Ustedes) is used. Uds. is used as
the plural for both the familiar tú and the formal Ud. You will
note, however, that the pronoun vosotros does exist. This is the
familiar plural of tú but its everyday usage is restricted to areas
of Spain.
The pronoun vos is used in
familiar speech in many areas of Latin America instead of tú. This
phenomenon is referred to as el voseo. In some areas el voseo is used by
speakers from all social and educational levels. In other areas it is
considered popular. The use of vos will be heard in varying degrees in
the following areas: Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, parts of
Peru, Ecuador, Colombia (excluding the northern coast), parts of Venezuela and
Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, the state of
Chiapas in Mexico, and in a very small area of Cuba.
The endings used with vos will be
pointed out as each tense is studied. There are no exercises using the vos form.
Regular
first conjugation verbs are commonly referred to as -ar
verbs. The reason for this is that their infinitives end in -ar.
Many of the most frequently used verbs belong to the first conjugation.
