A reflexive verb is usually one in which the action
is both executed and received by the subject. There are also reflexive verbs
that are just reflexive without logical explanation. Since the subject for the
most part also receives the action, an additional pronoun is needed. This is
called the reflexive pronoun.
lavarse (to
wash) me lavo te lavas se lava nos lavamos se lavan |
levantarse (to
get up) me levanto te levantas se levanta nos levantamos se levantan |
bañarse (to
bathe) me baño te bañas se baña nos bañamos se bañan |
Other common regular reflexive verbs are:
cepillarse ducharse peinarse marcharse quitarse |
to brush oneself to take a shower to comb one's hair to leave, go away to take off clothing |
Common stem-changing reflexive verbs are:
acostarse (ue) despertarse (ie) sentarse (ie) despedirse de (i, i) dormirse (ue, u) vestirse (i, i) |
to go to bed to wake up to sit down to take leave to fall asleep to dress oneself |
A common irregular verb used reflexively is ponerse,
to put on clothing.
acostarse me acuesto te acuestas se acuesta nos acostamos se acuestan |
vestirse me visto te vistes se viste nos vestimos se visten |
ponerse me pongo te pones se pone nos ponemos se ponen |
The following verbs can be used with or without the
reflexive pronoun.

The reflexive pronoun is more commonly used in Latin
America than in Spain.

something to or for each other. In Spanish a reciprocal verb functions exactly
the same as a reflexive verb. Study the following examples.

SPECIAL USES OF THE INFINITIVE
There are two special uses of the infinitive in
Spanish that are different from English constructions. In Spanish the
infinitive is always used after a preposition. (In English the present
participle is used.)
Yo le
hablé antes de salir.
I spoke to him before leaving.
The word
al with the infinitive means upon, when, as.
Al salir, me despedí de mis amigos. |
Upon leaving, I took leave of (said
goodbye to) my friends. |
6. Rewrite the following sentences, substituting the
indicated infinitives.
1. Yo le
hablé antes de salir. (cantar, bailar, comer, salir, decidir, volver, terminar,
empezar)
2. Al
salir, se pusieron a llorar. (volver, recibir las noticias, oír el anuncio,
marcharse)
After the verbs to see or to hear someone do
something the infinitive is used. Unlike English, the infinitive precedes the
noun.
0í cantar a Maria. Vio morir a los soldados. |
I heard Mary sing. He saw the soldiers die. |
7. Rewrite the following sentences in Spanish.
1.

2.
I heard the baby cry.
3.
1 heard the robber enter.
4.

5.
I saw the actress arrive.
6.
I saw the baby fall.
You will sometimes hear the preposition a
or de followed by an infinitive used to replace a "Si"
clause.
De no tener bastante dinero, no hubiera
ido. A conocer su carácter, no le habríamos
tenido confianza. |
If I hadn't had enough money, I wouldn't
have gone. If we had known his character, we would
not have had confidence in him. |
In Spanish the infinitive either alone or
accompanied by the definite article el can
function as a noun. Note that in English the present participle rather than the
infinitive is used as the verbal noun. Study the following examples.
No puedo aguantar el fumar. Leer sin luz suficiente puede perjudicar
los ojos. |
I can't stand smoking. Reading without sufficient light can harm
one's eyes. |

5.

niños.
Me está volviendo loco.
With ser
The passive voice is less commonly used in Spanish
than in English. Spanish speakers prefer to use the active voice. When the true
passive voice is used, however, it is formed by using the verb ser
plus the past participle. The agent or person who performed the action is
introduced by por. Por
is replaced by de if emotion is involved. Note that
the past participle agrees with the subject.
Las cartas fueron entregadas por el
cartero. El cartero entregó las cartas. (more common) Aquel soldado fue admirado de todos. |
The letters were delivered by the letter
carrier. The letter carrier delivered the letters.

The most common usage of the passive voice is an abbreviated form of the passive used for newspaper headlines.

is carried out (agent) is unimportant.
