The present participle is seldom used alone. In literary pieces, however, you will sometimes see a present participle used to replace an entire clause.
Construyendo
el puente, se cayó. While
he was constructing the bridge, he fell.
Yendo
al mercado, vio a su amiga. Going
to the market, he saw his friend.
The most common use of the present participle is
with the progressive tenses, which follow.
The
progressive tenses in Spanish are very graphic, pictorial tenses. When used
they show that the action of the verb is in the process of taking place. The
progressive forms are most commonly used with the present, the imperfect, and
sometimes the future. In order to form the progressive tense the appropriate
tense of the auxiliary verbs estar, seguir,
ir, or andar is used
along with the present participle. You will find that the most commonly used
auxiliary is estar.
